1/100 MG Guntank part 1

For a change of build, I decided to go with MG Guntank next. After waiting 0079 though with the kids, I really began to appreciate some of the designs, and bought MGs of Guntank, Zeong and Gouf. DSC03406The Guntank has a surprising level of detail on its inner frame. DSC03405Although most of the inner frame will be gunmetal, I’m using Alclad copper, brass and aluminum for various sections, most of which I’ll have to mask. DSC03404 There’s a fair few springs in the design, and they’re being done in the copper.DSC03403 DSC03402 Here’s one of the primarily gunmetal sections. I used Tamiya gunmetal, and hand painted in some details with Tamiya smoke. I painted all the coloured armour sections first, although I don’t have any photos of them to show yet. Yellow is Createx pearl gold with Tamiya clear yellow. Blue is Createx pearl blue, and red is Createx pearl red with Tamiya clear red.DSC03401The white armour pieces are Createx white with Createx pearl white on top. Because of doing all the armour pieces first, I was able to assemble the core fighter. It goes together the same as the one I built recently for RX78-2 v3.0. It’s a nice little build.DSC03407Next up is masking for the details of the inner frame tank section. First up is Alclad gloss black then Alclad brass or copper. Then I put a coat of Future Finish to protect the pieces so the masking tape wouldn’t pull off the paint. A good tip on the masking tape is to use a pencil around the edges to mark and press the tape so as to make it easy to carefully slice with your craft knife.DSC03408 These sections have Alclad copper for the “springs” and brass for the other sections. The brass is just about to be painted on in the shot above.DSC03409 I wasn’t quite sure where to take this section. I wanted to carry through my theme of copper for the springs, so I did the entire piece in Alclad copper. I then went in by hand with silver and gold Gundam marker for the details, put another coat of Future Finish on top, and then more detail work with Tamiya smoke and black oil wash. I used some Tamiya gunmetal for the grey sections at the base of the piece.DSC03410 Brass and chrome work great for hydraulics.DSC03411 Here’s the part now where you can see the spring in copper and the outer section in brass. It’ll get a top coat of Future Finish before it goes to hand painting for details.DSC03412 Now you can see how the darkened Tamiya gunmetal goes on for the unmasked regions.DSC03413I darkened the Tamiya gunmetal with the addition of some Createx black to the bottle. DSC03414Before I removed the masking tape, I did a flat coat on the gunmetal. The rest of the pieces all have a good amount of Tamiya smoke hand painted on to enhance the details on the brass and copper.

  1. Your images are so pretty. If anybody say what we do isn’t art, show them the fourth picture.
Weathering on the core fighter is good, like it’s been through flak or a heavy smoke from a battle field.
Looks like this one won’t disappoint.
